Chapter 39: Gratitude
David had just finished his shift at the grocery store, his body weary but his spirit light. As he walked through the Rising Phoenix Hotel staff entrance, he couldn’t help but marvel again at the grandeur of his surroundings.
He had been living in this hotel for a while now. Although he didn’t know precisely why he was given such generous accommodations, he deeply appreciated the housing and care provided to him. It was a level of comfort he had never experienced before, and he felt immensely grateful for it.
He had long desired to return this kindness in some way, though he didn’t have much to give. He had saved most of the wages he had earned from his job at the grocery store with the intention of offering it as payment for his stay at the hotel. David knew the modest sum he had managed to save was hardly a fraction of what his suite would typically cost. But it wasn’t about the amount; it was about the sentiment behind it. He wanted to show his gratitude in whatever way he could.
As he made his way to the manager’s office, he clutched the envelope containing his hard-earned wages tightly in his hand. His heart pounded in his chest, a mix of nervousness and determination flowing through him. He hoped his gesture would be well-received and that the manager would understand the heartfelt gratitude behind it.
He knocked lightly on the door of the manager’s office, and it immediately opened to reveal Mr. Atlas, the hotel manager. Mr. Atlas greeted him with a warm smile, inviting him inside. The office was tastefully decorated, with a large desk dominating the room and a window offering a magnificent view of the city.
David took a deep breath, gathering his courage before speaking.
“Mr. Atlas, I want to thank you for everything you’ve done for me,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady, despite his nervousness. “The care, the accommodation, everything. I appreciate it more than I can express.”
He held out the envelope, his hand slightly trembling.
“This is my way of showing my gratitude. It’s not much, but it’s all I can offer, for now.”
Mr. Atlas looked at him for a moment, his eyes reflecting a mix of surprise and…pride? He returned the envelope, his expression softening.
“Sir, please be assured that this isn’t necessary,” Mr. Atlas said, his voice filled with sincerity. “Your presence here is not a trouble at all. In fact, several of our staff have mentioned that your friendliness and humility are a welcomed change of pace from the typical entitlement of the guests who stay here. I’m sure this cash was hard to come by; perhaps you could put it towards some form of entertainment or something of interest.”
“No, Mr. Atlas. This money must go towards the hotel and its staff,” David replied with determination. “I have been the recipient of your generosity for a while now, and it would be dishonorable for me to continue burdening the hotel without showing my gratitude.”
David placed the envelope on Mr. Atlas’ desk.
“Please accept this. I know that if my parents were alive, they would want me to do this. They would want me to repay the kindness and generosity I’ve received.”

Ben was at a loss for words. Indeed, William and Bethany Hall, David’s biological parents, had always been known for their courteousness and respectability. They had a reputation for giving generously, and always made it a point to repay any kindness they received manifold. This trait of theirs was one of the many things that had earned them the respect and admiration of those around them.
Seeing David now, standing in front of him with such earnestness and sincerity, Ben couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride. Despite having been orphaned at a very young age and having to endure the wrath of his adoptive mother, Shiela, for over a decade, David had grown into an honorable man. He had faced hardships that would have broken many. Yet, he stood tall, his spirit unbroken, his heart filled with gratitude and humility.
His desire to repay the kindness and generosity he had received was a testament to his character. It was a reflection of the values that William and Bethany had instilled in him, values that had remained with him despite the trials and tribulations he had faced. It was clear to Ben that David was truly their son, not just by blood but by virtue as well.
“Very well then,” Ben said, accepting the envelope. “I will distribute this to our staff and let them know that their hard work is greatly appreciated. As for your accommodations, please do not worry on our behalf or feel that you’re imposing. I can assure you, our establishment’s operations are healthy and profitable.”
“Thank you, Mr. Atlas,” David beamed. “I don’t know how much longer it’ll take me to save up and find an affordable place to stay, but I hope I won’t have to impose my presence too much longer.”
